THIRTEEN

Elsa heaved her bulk from the back seat of the cab while the driver pulled her suitcase out of the trunk. Looking up at the rows of balconies creeping up the side of the white brick building before her, she guessed which one belonged to the condo of her destination.

The third one from the top on the left, she thought. So, let me see... that would make it the one, two, three, four, five, six, seventh floor. Hmm, unlucky.

The sound of her luggage bag being unceremoniously dropped onto the sidewalk beside her as the cab driver grunted ‘good-bye’ ended her little guessing game. She stacked her carry-on on top of her luggage bag and secured the pull handle of her bag into her grip before starting into the building. It looked to be old enough to have come from the era of stairs. She fervently hoped an elevator awaited her.

She was not only relieved when she came upon the ornately gilded elevator, but she was thankful when she discovered it was operated by, Scott; an immaculately dressed and delightfully polite young man who took it upon himself to assist her with her luggage and remain in her assistance until she stood in front of my condo door; at which time he politely took his leave.

Surprised by his refusal of the tip she offered him, Elsa studied Scott as he made his way down the hall back to the elevator and disappear behind the closing doors. She turned back to face my condo door as Jessica pulled it open.

Elsa stood silently while Jessica’s oval eyes assessed her with barely disguised hostility. It didn’t take a mind reader to recognize the fact that her visit wasn’t a welcomed one. After a brief, uncomfortable, and piercingly awkward moment, Elsa sighed and introduced herself. Her trip had been cramped, long, and hurried. She was tired and just wanted to put her feet up while sipping on a cup of tea. If this young slip of a thing didn’t let her in soon she’d just barge her way past her and make a bee line for the inviting overstuffed sofa that she’d immediately spotted against the far wall of the inviting room beyond the entrance Jessica blocked.

As if reading her mind, Jessica bowed her head slightly and swept her arm in a gesture indicating for Elsa to enter. The older woman smiled wryly while she slid gingerly past the younger one. She was too tired for games.

“Since you let me in, I assume you know who I am,” Elsa said.

“You just told it to me,” Jessica flatly replied, “but what I don’t know if you’re a vampire or a human.”

Elsa raised an eyebrow, “You believe in vampires.”

“Who told you that?” she spat.

“You just said you didn’t know if I was one,” Elsa said impatiently. “That would indicate that you believed in them.”

“I don’t,” Jess said quickly.

“I see,” Elsa mused.

She thought about how to continue. She knew almost nothing about Jessica, but she’d sensed the minute
